Some may wonder why drawing is important to a graphic designer in this modern age of technology. My answer is simple: Drawing is the fundamental medium by which we express our ideas, so why discount it?
My work sees me working predominantly as a creative graphic designer, and, trust me, it feels absolutely amazing to be able to conceive an idea, visualise and execute it. I feel it makes me a more cost-effective resource for my clients and also means the projects I work on are more exciting for me.
In this same way, being able to perceive an idea in your mind and be able to sketch it out with clarity, the feeling of expressing yourself knowing that each stroke of your media is bringing your idea into reality is both inspiring and satisfying.
Like all things, practice makes perfect (almost) and I must admit I have been lazy over the years when it came to drawing because I dont use it much in my work.
I have come to realise that it has always been my first love before design and I need to give it a bit more 'TLC'. I loved growing up and seeing my dad drawing and illustrating. It is my inspiration.
God bless the pencil, paper, the stylus and the tablet! Vive l'art!
